About Us

Thom Dodd is my name. I was born in Oregon, home of Bike Friday, and transplanted to California when I was 5. There I grew up a bit, but I continued cycling (starting when I was 4 – my first 2 wheeler) wherever I lived. As a teacher for years with a 25 mile a day commute, I bicycled to work every day of the year, rain or shine, except the first and last day of each year for the whole of my career. I taught in California most of 25 years and in New Zealand a few of the 12 years I have lived here. Immigrated in 1996, so I have now been here 12 years and am proud to be a NZ citizen.

My wife Pam and I have settled in Hahei on the Coromandel peninsula. Both of us have been cyclists, although me for more years (not just because I am 7 days older). We cycle with the Blazing Saddles bicycle club here in Hahei, and of course if you get up this way you are welcome to ride with us – we always have rides on Saturdays, and often ride other days of the week as well.

I have always cycled for as much of my needs as possible. Commuting, touring, travelling, fitness, and working up a good appetite so I can eat more. I have always advocated sustainable living, and tried to model cycling as a means toward that end to my students. I do what I can to get folks out of their cars and using their fine bodies and muscles. And distributing Bike Fridays is another way to do this for me.
